The Element Of Starting

Fire is what moves before the analysis is finished. Its three signs — Aries, Leo and Sagittarius — share the conviction that motion produces better information than deliberation does, and they are not entirely wrong about it.

What the element supplies is initiative that does not have to be summoned. Where other temperaments need a reason to begin, fire needs a reason not to, and that asymmetry accounts for most of what fire signs are admired and blamed for.

The corresponding blind spot is the middle of things. Fire is excellent at the first ten per cent of any undertaking and noticeably less interested by the sixtieth, which is the point at which the rest of the zodiac usually takes over.

Three Different Fires

How Fire Fails

The characteristic failure is not aggression but abandonment. Fire loses interest once the outcome stops being in doubt, and a trail of promising things left at eighty per cent is a more accurate portrait of the element than anger ever was.

Impatience with process is the second. Fire treats procedure as friction rather than as the mechanism by which anything survives contact with other people, and it tends to discover the value of the paperwork only after skipping it.

The third is a genuine difficulty in registering that other people move at other speeds. What fire experiences as encouragement can land as pressure, and the element is often surprised to learn that it has been exhausting rather than motivating.

Living Alongside The Other Three

With earth the arrangement is exasperating and effective. Earth handles what fire drops; fire supplies momentum earth would never manufacture. Neither much enjoys the other's method and both quietly rely on it.

With air it is easy and occasionally weightless. Air enjoys the pace and supplies the reasoning fire skipped, but two outward-facing elements can talk a project into existence and out of it again without anything happening.

With water it is hardest. Fire wants the problem addressed and water wants it felt first, and each reads the other's response as a refusal. Where it works, water gives fire something worth burning for and fire gives water the nerve to act on what it already knew.

Reading Fire In A Whole Chart

A chart weighted toward fire describes somebody visible, quick to commit, and better in a crisis than in a routine. It also describes somebody who needs a fresh challenge more often than most people's circumstances can supply.

Fire on the ascendant reads as directness whatever the rest of the chart is doing. People meet the manner before they meet the person, and a fire rising over a water sun is one of the more common sources of the complaint that nobody understands what someone is actually like.

A chart with no fire at all describes somebody whose motivation is constructed rather than spontaneous. That is not a deficit — deliberately built motivation is frequently more reliable than the inherited kind — but it does mean momentum has to be arranged for rather than waited on.

Are fire signs bad-tempered? The tradition says quick rather than bad, and the distinction matters. Choleric in the old medical sense meant fast to react, and the flare that arrives quickly is usually the one that clears quickly too.
