Mercury

Mercury governs how you think and communicate — the speed of your mind, the way you explain things, how you learn. It is the planet of everyday intelligence rather than deep wisdom.

In Your Chart

Mercury's placement shows whether you think in pictures or arguments, quickly or thoroughly. Its retrograde periods are traditionally associated with review rather than disaster.

The Function Of Processing

Mercury is how a mind takes information in, sorts it, and puts it back out. Perception, reasoning, speech, writing, the whole traffic of everyday thought — that is the job, and the sign describes the manner.

It says nothing about intelligence. Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Capricorn describe two entirely different processing styles, one fast and lateral, the other slow and structural, and neither is the superior instrument.

Because it is bound close to the Sun, Mercury only ever appears in your Sun's sign or in one immediately adjacent. That constraint is astronomical, not astrological — the planet is never more than about twenty-eight degrees away.

Why It Often Differs From The Sun

Sitting a sign either side of the Sun is common, and it produces the mismatch people notice without being able to name: somebody who acts like one sign and thinks like its neighbour.

A Leo Sun with Mercury in Virgo is expansive in manner and precise in reasoning. A Virgo Sun with Mercury in Libra is exacting about work and diplomatic in how it says so. Both combinations read as contradictions until you separate the layers.

This is one of the most useful things a chart adds to a sun sign, and it costs nothing to find out — Mercury's sign follows from the birth date alone.

The Retrograde Everybody Has Heard Of

Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year for roughly three weeks. It is the most frequent of the retrogrades and, by an enormous margin, the most talked about.

The apparent reversal is a trick of relative motion. Mercury orbits faster than the Earth, and when it overtakes us on the inside track it appears to slide backwards against the stars, exactly as a slower vehicle seems to when you pass it.

The traditional reading is review rather than disruption: revisiting conversations, rechecking arrangements, going back over things already decided. Read as a prompt to slow down on a specific class of task, that is reasonable. Read as an explanation for everything that goes wrong in three weeks, it is not.

Born While It Was Retrograde

About one person in five has a natal Mercury retrograde, which makes it common enough that treating it as a defect is plainly absurd.

The description is of a mind that runs internally before it runs out loud. Such people often report thinking something through completely before speaking, and finding the expectation of immediate verbal response genuinely uncomfortable.

It carries no implication about ability. Plenty of people who write and argue for a living have it, and the tradition treats it as a processing style rather than as an impairment.

What It Does Not Do

Mercury retrograde does not break technology, delay post, or cause misunderstandings. Devices fail and messages go astray at the same rate all year, and the periods are noticed because a frame has been supplied for noticing them.

The effect is well documented as a general feature of attention rather than anything astrological: once a category exists, instances that fit it become salient and instances that do not are discarded.

None of which makes the traditional advice useless — rechecking arrangements is sound practice in any three-week window. It simply is not caused by a planet.

The Name And The Rulership

Mercury is named for the Roman messenger god, the conductor of communication and exchange, and the astrological meaning follows the mythology closely rather than the astronomy.

It rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo, in both classical and modern schemes — one air and one earth. That pairing is the tradition acknowledging two quite different uses of the same faculty: Gemini gathers, Virgo refines.

It is also considered exalted in Virgo, the only planet to be exalted in a sign it already rules, which older sources treat as a sign of the faculty operating at maximum precision.

Common Questions

How do I find my Mercury sign? A full chart gives it exactly, and it will always be your Sun's sign or one on either side. Our Star Map computes it from your birth details.

Should I avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde? There is no evidence that anything about contracts changes. Reading them carefully is good advice in every three-week period of the year.

Does Mercury retrograde affect everyone equally? The tradition says its effects show most where it touches something in an individual chart. In practice, the periods are noticed most by people who are watching for them.
