Venus
Venus describes what you find beautiful and how you relate — your taste, your affections, what you consider worth having. It is about attraction in the widest sense, not romance alone.

In Your Chart
Venus shows how you give and receive affection, and what you are drawn to in a partner. It also describes your relationship with pleasure and with money.

The Function Of Valuing
Venus is what somebody finds worth having: in people, in objects, in the arrangement of a room. It governs attraction, taste, affection and what a person considers pleasant enough to want more of.
It is not the planet of love as a whole, which is a common oversimplification. Venus describes what draws you and how you express warmth; the wanting itself sits closer to Mars, and commitment is a matter of the seventh house and Saturn.
Like Mercury it stays near the Sun, within about forty-eight degrees, so it falls in your Sun's sign or within two on either side. Never further.
What The Sign Describes
Venus in fire is drawn to vitality and directness, and shows affection through enthusiasm and attention. It wants to be pursued visibly and does not respond well to subtlety.
Venus in earth is drawn to reliability and physical presence, and shows affection through action rather than declaration. The thing that was promised actually happening is, for this Venus, the declaration.
Venus in air is drawn to conversation and mental fit, and shows affection through interest — questions asked, ideas exchanged. It can find purely physical attraction insufficient in a way the other elements do not.
Venus in water is drawn to depth and emotional safety, and shows affection through attentiveness to state. It tends to know what is wrong before being told and to offer care rather than solutions.
Reading It Between Two People
Comparing two Venus placements says more about ordinary compatibility than sun signs do, because it describes how each person offers and recognises affection.
Most of the quiet trouble in otherwise sound relationships lives here. An earth Venus demonstrating care through practical service, offered to an air Venus that recognises care as conversation, produces two people both trying and neither feeling met.
The fix is usually translation rather than change. Once each party knows the other's currency, the same effort starts landing, and very little about either person has to be different.
Retrograde Venus
Venus turns retrograde about every eighteen months for roughly six weeks, which makes it far rarer than Mercury's and correspondingly less discussed.
The traditional reading is reassessment of what is valued — old attachments resurfacing, taste being revised, previously settled questions about worth reopening.
A natal Venus retrograde is comparatively uncommon and is read as somebody whose sense of value is arrived at internally rather than absorbed from those around them. It says nothing about anybody's prospects in love.
What It Does Not Mean
Venus does not determine who anybody will end up with, and no placement makes a person lucky or unlucky in relationships. Charts describe disposition, not outcome.
It also does not describe worth. A Venus placement says what somebody is drawn to, not whether they deserve what they want, and any reading suggesting otherwise has left the tradition entirely.
Nothing here bears on money decisions, despite Venus's traditional association with resources. That association is symbolic and should not be treated as financial guidance.
Mythology And Rulership
Venus is named for the Roman goddess of love and beauty, and the astrological function tracks the mythology rather than the planet, which is a hot and inhospitable place with no bearing on the symbolism.
It rules Taurus and Libra in every scheme — one earth, one air. The tradition is again splitting a faculty in two: Taurus values what can be touched and kept, Libra values proportion and relation.
It is exalted in Pisces, where older sources describe the capacity for affection as operating without limit, and considered in its fall in Virgo, where the same capacity turns critical.
Common Questions
Can my Venus be far from my Sun? No further than two signs either side. If a reading places it further, something has gone wrong in the calculation.
Is Venus the same as attraction? Partly. Venus is what you find appealing and how you express warmth; Mars is closer to the drive itself, and most readings look at both.
Does Venus in a hard aspect mean a difficult love life? It describes tension between two functions, not a verdict. Plenty of long marriages sit under charts full of hard Venus aspects.
